Intro to Life in University
Published: October 13, 2016
So this blog will be a little introduction to University Durham.
Durham is a very hilly, quaint little town in the North-East of England. Durham Cathedral and Castle are both World Heritage Sites, and dominate the sky-line.
Durham University is collegiate, which means everyone is part of a college for their whole university life, instead of just being assigned student accommodation in first year. There is a noticeable lack of international students, especially compared to London universities, yet the international community is thriving. Academic life is centralised, and everyone goes to lectures/seminars/tutorials together. However, my social/extra-curricular life was completely college based in first year. Sport is massive at Durham, and the advantage of the college system is that, even if you aren’t good enough to play uni-level sport, you can play college level sport. It’s much less intense than uni sport, more flexible, and Wednesday night socials are always a good night out. Speaking of nights out, Durham has about 5 clubs and a few bars. Students also go out in Newcastle, which is just a 15 minute train away.
Feel free to ask any questions you like in the comments, and I’ll address them in subsequent blogs.
